Selling an Exotic Car Out of State

The buyer being two thousand miles away changes the paperwork, not the price.

Sellers often assume a local buyer is worth more, on the theory that distance means complication. In practice distance is a solved problem, and restricting yourself to local buyers is what costs money — because it shrinks the pool bidding on your car.

Who handles what

  • Title transfer follows your state's rules, not the buyer's. You sign as seller under the law where the car is titled. A professional buyer prepares those documents for your state specifically.
  • Sales tax is the buyer's problem. Tax is generally assessed where the vehicle will be registered, by the purchaser. You are not collecting or remitting anything.
  • Registration is the buyer's problem too. They register it in their state. Your plates typically come off and are surrendered or retained per your state's rules.
  • Lien release, if there is finance, is coordinated with your lender regardless of where the buyer sits. Distance is irrelevant to it.

Transport

Enclosed transport is the standard for exotics and it should not be your cost or your arrangement. A serious buyer arranges and pays for it, insures the car in transit, and collects from wherever it is — a home garage, a storage facility, a workshop. The car does not need to run.

A buyer asking you to arrange shipping, or to meet halfway, is telling you something about how they operate.

The thing that genuinely matters at distance

Trust, and it is earned with documentation. A buyer committing without seeing the car in person is relying on the VIN, your photographs and the service history. That is why honest photographs of flaws matter more in an out-of-state sale than a local one — there is no walkaround to catch what you left out.

Get that right and distance disappears. Get it wrong and the deal unravels on collection day, which is worse than it unravelling before transport was booked. There is more on this in what photos actually help.

Regional history cuts both ways

Where your car has lived is priced. Cars from salt states get their underbodies inspected. Cars from flood-prone states get their history checked hard. Cars from dry states carry a premium and should say so. None of this is about the buyer's location — it is about the car's, and it is worth documenting.

How it works with us

We buy remotely as the default, in every state. Send the VIN and photos, get one written offer inside the hour, sign electronically, and we collect at our cost. The markets we work most often are here, though the offer does not change if yours is not listed.
