How to Sell an Exotic Car With a Loan on It
Owing money on the car is not an obstacle. It is the normal case, and it is handled between us and your lender.
Owners regularly assume they need to pay off a car before they can sell it. That is not how it works, and trying to do it that way costs you money — you would be settling a loan with your own cash to sell an asset you are about to be paid for.
The majority of the cars we buy still have finance on them. Here is the actual sequence.
How the payoff works
- You tell us who the lender is. That is all we need to start — the institution and, ideally, the account number.
- We request the payoff quote. Lenders issue a figure valid to a specific date, including per-diem interest. We deal with them directly rather than sending you to sit on hold.
- We pay the lender first. The payoff goes to them from the purchase price, not from your pocket.
- You receive the equity. Whatever remains after the payoff is wired to you. One transaction, two destinations.
The title stays with the lender until they are satisfied, which is why the wire timing follows the transfer rather than the handshake. That is normal and it is the part we manage.
If you owe more than the car is worth
This is negative equity, and it is common on cars bought new with a small deposit. It does not prevent a sale.
The arithmetic is simple: if the payoff exceeds the offer, you cover the difference at signing. That is unwelcome, but it is not created by selling — it already exists. Selling simply makes it visible. The alternative is continuing to make payments on a depreciating car, which usually widens the gap rather than closing it.
Leases are different
A lease is not a loan, and the numbers work differently — there is a buyout figure, and whether there is equity depends on how the residual compares to the market. That has its own mechanics, covered in selling a leased exotic car.
What to have ready
- The lender name and account number.
- The VIN, which resolves the exact build.
- Photos and any service records.
- Your best understanding of the payoff figure — we verify it, but it helps to know roughly where you stand.
Send the VIN and we will come back with a written offer. Once you know the number, the payoff question answers itself.
